Sabino Barinaga Alberdi (born August 15, 1922 – died March 19, 1988) was a famous Spanish football player and coach. He played as a forward, scoring many goals. Sabino spent most of his playing career with Real Madrid. He played in 205 La Liga matches and scored 92 goals. After he stopped playing, he became a football manager for almost 25 years.

Sabino's Football Journey as a Player

Sabino was born in Durango, Biscay, Spain. When he was a teenager, he moved to England with his siblings. This was because of the Spanish Civil War. Many other young people who moved at that time also became footballers. Sabino was found by the Southampton football club. He played for their reserve team and scored an amazing 62 goals in one season!

Playing for Real Madrid

After the war, Sabino returned to Spain. He decided to join Real Madrid, even though a big team from his home region, Athletic Bilbao, wanted him. He played as an inside forward, which means he played closer to the middle of the field.

Sabino made his first La Liga appearance on April 28, 1940. This was in a game against Athletic Bilbao. From 1943 to 1945, Sabino scored 38 goals in 48 games for Real Madrid. He also spent two years playing on loan for Real Valladolid in the Segunda División.

Sabino made history by scoring the very first goal at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. This happened on December 14, 1947, in a 3–1 win against a team from Portugal. During his nine years at Real Madrid, he helped the team win three major trophies. These included two Copa del Generalísimo cups. He even scored a goal in the 1946 final against Valencia CF.

One of his most famous games was on June 13, 1943. Sabino scored four goals in just 13 minutes! This helped Real Madrid win 11–1 against their rivals, FC Barcelona, in a cup semi-final.

Sabino left Real Madrid in 1950. In his last season, he even played as a central defender. After Real Madrid, he played three more seasons in the top league for Real Sociedad. In 1954, he joined Real Betis and then retired as a player.

Sabino's Career as a Coach

After he stopped playing, Sabino started coaching. His first coaching job was with his last club, Real Betis.

Coaching Different Clubs

In the 1957–58 season, he coached CA Osasuna in the top division. He stayed in the top league for most of the next ten years. In 1962, he helped CD Málaga get promoted from the second division. However, they were relegated back down the next season. This also happened when he coached Betis in 1968 and RCD Mallorca in 1970.

Coaching Abroad

Sabino also coached football teams in other countries. He worked for a few months with Club América in Mexico. Later, he became the coach for the national teams of Nigeria and Morocco. His last coaching job was with Real Oviedo. He had coached them before in the top league. In 1978, he could not stop them from being relegated from the second division.
