Who Was Sabit Brokaj?

His Early Life and Education

Sabit Brokaj was born on January 7, 1942, in Vlorë, a city in Albania. At that time, Albania was under Italian control. From 1959 to 1964, when he was a young man, Brokaj worked as a medical assistant on a submarine.

He studied medicine at the University of Tirana, graduating in 1969. After finishing his studies, he worked as a medical chief in Shijak from 1969 to 1972.

His Career as a Doctor

From 1972 to 1984, Brokaj worked as a cardiologist at a military hospital in Tirana. A cardiologist is a doctor who specializes in the heart. He even traveled to France to learn more about cardiology in 1979 and about echocardiology (using sound waves to look at the heart) in 1982.

In 1984, Brokaj left the military. He became a professor at a medical school in Tirana. He was promoted to Deputy Dean of the school in 1987. Then, in 1989, he became the Dean, which is like the head of the school. He stayed in this role until 1991.

Sabit Brokaj's Political Journey

Entering Albanian Politics

Sabit Brokaj became involved in Albanian politics after the end of communism in the country. He was known as a member of the "old guard" of the Socialist Party of Albania.

His first major political role was as the Minister of Health. He served in this position from February to December 1991. He was also elected as a Deputy (a representative) in the People's Assembly in 1991, 1996, and 1997. In 1992, he was elected to lead the Socialist Party of Albania.

Serving as Minister of Defence

On July 25, 1997, Sabit Brokaj was appointed as the Minister of Defence. This was a challenging time for Albania because it followed a period of serious unrest in 1997. During this time, many military items were damaged or stolen by rioters. Even some missiles were taken.

To help rebuild Albania's military, Brokaj worked with countries like Turkey and Greece. He aimed to strengthen the country's defence forces after the difficult period.
