About Sacred Heart Church
This church is one of only three Catholic churches in this part of the world. The other two are found on Ascension Island (called the Church of Our Lady of the Ascension) and on Tristan da Cunha (called St. Joseph Church).
A Bit of History
The first Catholic priests came to Saint Helena a long time ago, in 1819. They arrived with a famous person named Napoleon Bonaparte. These priests were Father Antonio Bounavita and Father Ange Vignali. Father Vignali was even there for Napoleon's burial in 1821.
For about 30 years after that, priests only visited the island sometimes. Then, in 1852, a permanent church was built. This was a big step for the Catholic community on the island. The first priest who lived on the island arrived around that time.
The church is part of a special group called the Mission sui iuris of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. This group was created in 1986 by Pope John Paul II.
