The Sacred Heart Church is a Catholic church located in Jamestown, a town on the island of Saint Helena. This island is part of a British territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean.
This church is one of three Catholic churches in the territory. The other two are found in Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha.
History of the Church
The first Catholic priests arrived on Saint Helena in 1819. They came with Napoleon Bonaparte. Two priests, Father Antonio Bounavita and Father Ange Vignali, were among them. Father Bounavita left in 1821. Father Vignali stayed to perform Napoleon's last rites and burial service in May 1821.
For the next 30 years, priests only visited the island sometimes. A permanent church building was finally built in 1852. The first priest to live on the island arrived that same year. The church is part of the Mission sui juris of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. This special church area was created in 1986 by Pope John Paul II.
