Sage Sharp is a talented American software engineer. They are well-known for their important work on the Linux kernel, which is like the main brain of the Linux operating system. Sage also served on the Linux Foundation's Technical Advisory Board for two years, helping to guide the future of Linux.

About Sage Sharp

Sage Sharp started working on the Linux kernel in 2006. This was while they were still studying at Portland State University. Later, they continued their work with help from a special research grant from Intel.

Key Contributions to Linux

Sage's contributions to the Linux kernel include creating and managing the program that helps computers use USB 3.0 devices. This program is called a driver.

In 2015, Sage suggested that the Linux project should have a "code of conduct." This is a set of rules about how people should behave and communicate. The creator of Linux, Linus Torvalds, decided to use a "code of conflict" instead.

Sage stopped working directly on the kernel on October 5, 2015. They mentioned that the way people communicated in the developer community was sometimes harsh. They also noted "abusive commentary" on new ideas or changes that were submitted.

Helping Others in Tech

Sage Sharp was a volunteer co-coordinator for the Outreachy project. This project helps people from groups that are often left out get involved in open source technology. Sage led a team that worked on the Linux kernel for Outreachy internships in June 2013.

Today, through their company Otter Tech LLC, Sage works with Outreachy in a paid role. They provide training on how to make sure codes of conduct are followed. They also teach workshops on how to handle problems when they happen.

Awards and Recognition

Sage Sharp has received several awards for their work. In 2015, they won the first annual Red Hat Women in Open Source Community Award. This award recognized their efforts to improve communication and welcome more women into open source groups.

In 2016, Sage also won the O'Reilly Open Source Award. This award celebrated their many achievements in the open source community.

Early Life and Education

Sage Sharp grew up in a town called Rainier, Oregon. They later attended Portland State University for their college studies. While at the university, Sage earned special credits by working on the Linux kernel.
