Sahneuti: A Clever Gwich'in Leader

A Chief and Fur Trader

Sahneuti was known as a chief, which means he was a leader for his people. He was also a fur trader. This meant he helped his community trade animal furs for goods like tools and supplies. This was a very important job in his time.

Dealing with Trading Companies

Working with the Hudson's Bay Company

In 1847, a big trading company called the Hudson's Bay Company set up a trading post. This post was at a place called Fort Yukon. The company's leader, Alexander Hunter Murray, saw how good Sahneuti was. He made Sahneuti a Chief Trader for the company. This was a big role.

Trading with American Companies

Later, in 1869, things changed. The United States bought Alaska. This event is known as the Alaska Purchase. After this, the Hudson's Bay Company had to leave Fort Yukon. Sahneuti then tried to trade with American companies. But he was not happy with the deals they offered.

He even led a group to Fort Yukon to show their unhappiness. Eventually, another American company, the Alaska Commercial Company, put him in charge of their trade at Fort Yukon. This showed how much they respected his trading skills.

Always Helping His People

Even though he worked with different companies, Sahneuti was very smart. He kept good relationships with both the Hudson's Bay Company and the American traders. He would often make the two companies compete. This way, he could get the very best deals for his Gwich'in people. He always put his community first.

His Legacy

Sahneuti's name lives on today. A place in Alaska, called Senati, is named after him. This area is along the middle Yukon River. It was settled by the Gwichyaa Gwich’in people. Senati, Alaska (65°15′58″N 151°10′59″W / 65.266°N 151.183°W / 65.266; -151.183) reminds us of his important role.
