When she was eighteen, Sahra moved to the United States as a refugee. Her family settled in Arlington, Virginia. She finished high school quickly, in just two years.

Later, she studied at the University of Minnesota. She earned a master's degree in nursing. This degree focused on how to manage health systems and global health.
