The Sahyadris forest rat (scientific name: Rattus satarae) is a special type of rat. It belongs to the Muridae family, which includes many kinds of mice and rats. This rat lives only in the northern part of the Western Ghats in India. You can find it in three main areas: Satara in Maharashtra, the Nilgiri mountains in Tamil Nadu, and Kodagu district in Karnataka.

Why It's Vulnerable

The Sahyadris forest rat is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. This means it faces a high risk of becoming extinct in the wild. It lives in a small area of forest, less than 2,000 square kilometers. The places where it lives are broken up into small pieces. This makes the rat very sensitive to changes in its home.

The quality of its habitat is getting worse. Also, the number of adult rats is going down. The biggest dangers to this rat are forests being cut down for farms or plantations. Other threats include logging, using chemicals called pesticides, and planting trees that are not native to the area.

Where It Lives

This rat has only been seen in the moist deciduous and evergreen forests of the northern Western Ghats in India. It lives at high altitudes, between 700 and 2,150 meters above sea level.

The Sahyadris forest rat mostly lives in nests or burrows high up in trees. It only sometimes comes down to the ground near the base of a tree or vine. It enjoys eating fruits and insects.

What It Looks Like

The Sahyadris forest rat has a long, soft coat. Its back is a golden brown color, and its belly is white. It also has a very long tail.

This rat was first thought to be a type of black rat (Rattus rattus). This was because they looked very similar. However, scientists used DNA evidence to study them. They found that these are two different species. Even though they live in the same places, they do not breed with each other. Their similar looks are thought to be due to convergent evolution. This means they developed similar traits because they live in the same kind of environment and have the same role in nature.
