Saint-Charles-de-Percy was a small village, also known as a commune, located in the northwest of France. It was part of the region called Basse-Normandie and the department named Calvados.

On January 1, 2016, Saint-Charles-de-Percy joined with other nearby communes to form a new, larger commune called Valdallière. This means it is no longer a separate commune on its own.

About Saint-Charles-de-Percy

Saint-Charles-de-Percy was a quiet place with a small population. In 1999, about 170 people lived there. The village was situated in an area with varying heights, from 134 meters (about 440 feet) to 245 meters (about 804 feet) above sea level. Its average height was 160 meters (about 525 feet).

What is a Commune?

In France, a commune is the smallest unit of local government. Think of it like a town or a small district. Each commune has its own mayor and a local council that manages things like local services and public spaces. Saint-Charles-de-Percy was one of these small local areas before it merged.

Where is it Located?

Saint-Charles-de-Percy was found in the Calvados department. This department is part of the Basse-Normandie region, which is in the northwestern part of France. This area is known for its green landscapes and historical significance.

The Calvados Department

The Calvados department is named after a group of rocks off its coast. It's famous for its apple orchards, dairy farms, and a type of apple brandy also called Calvados. Many historical events, including parts of World War II, took place in this region.

The Basse-Normandie Region

Basse-Normandie, or Lower Normandy, is one of the regions of France. It's known for its beautiful coastline, rich history, and agricultural areas. It's a popular place for both farming and tourism.

Local Government and History

Like all communes, Saint-Charles-de-Percy had a mayor who was in charge of the local government. From 2008 to 2014, the mayor was Jacques Desormeau. The mayor and the local council worked together to serve the people living in the commune.

Why Do Communes Merge?

Communes sometimes merge to create larger ones. This can happen for several reasons:

  • Better Services: Larger communes can sometimes provide better public services, like schools or waste collection, because they have more resources.
  • Stronger Economy: Merging can help create a stronger local economy by bringing together different businesses and resources.
  • Easier Management: It can simplify local government by having fewer, but larger, administrative units.

The merger of Saint-Charles-de-Percy into Valdallière on January 1, 2016, was part of a trend in France to create larger, more efficient local government areas.
