The Saint-Jacques River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Portneuf River. This river runs through the towns of Pont-Rouge and Saint-Basile. These towns are part of the Portneuf Regional County Municipality.
The Saint-Jacques River mostly flows through farms. Farming is the main way people make a living in this area. The river also passes by a few small forests.
Two roads, chemin du rang Saint-Jacques and chemin du rang Terrebonne, follow this river valley.
The river usually freezes over from early December to late March. It's safest to walk on the ice from late December to early March. The amount of water in the river changes with the seasons. It gets higher when it rains a lot or when snow melts in spring. This spring flood usually happens in March or April.
Where Does the Saint-Jacques River Start?
The Saint-Jacques River begins in a farming area. This spot is on the west side of a small village in Pont-Rouge. The village has a street called rue Germain and a road called chemin du rang Terrebonne.
The river's starting point is:
- About 1.4 kilometres (0.87 mi) northwest of the railway tracks.
- About 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) west of the center of Pont-Rouge town.
- About 6.4 kilometres (4.0 mi) northeast of the center of Saint-Basile village.
- About 5.4 kilometres (3.4 mi) northeast of where the Saint-Jacques River ends.
- About 9.9 kilometres (6.2 mi) north of where the Jacques-Cartier River meets the Saint Lawrence River.
How the River Flows
From its start, the Saint-Jacques River flows for about 7.8 kilometres (4.8 mi). It drops about 34 metres (112 ft) in height along its path.
Here's how it flows:
- For 4.9 kilometres (3.0 mi), it goes southwest through farms. Along the way, it picks up water from two small streams. These streams come from the north and drain a marshy area.
- For the next 2.9 kilometres (1.8 mi), it first goes west, then turns south. It flows next to chemin du rang Saint-Jacques until it reaches its end.
The Saint-Jacques River ends by joining the Portneuf River. This meeting point is about 0.7 kilometres (0.43 mi) upstream from where the Rivière des Sept Îles joins the Portneuf River. From here, the water flows another 14.8 kilometres (9.2 mi) down the Portneuf River. The Portneuf River then winds southwest until it reaches the north shore of the St. Lawrence River.
What's in a Name?
