Where the Saint-Louis River Flows
The Saint-Louis River is located in the southwestern part of Quebec. It's a relatively short river, about 30.3 kilometers (18.8 miles) long.
River's Starting Point
The Saint-Louis River begins in a marshy area near the village of Sainte-Barbe. This same marsh is also the source for another river, the rivière La Guerre.
- The Donohoe Creek helps drain the eastern part of this marsh.
- The Cowan Creek drains the southern part.
Journey to Lake Saint-Louis
From its start, the Saint-Louis River flows generally northeast.
- For the first 12.8 kilometers (about 8 miles), it runs alongside the southern shore of Lake Saint Francis.
- This part of the river flows in a very straight line because it was dug out a long time ago.
- It passes north of the village of Saint-Stanislas-de-Kostka.
Next, the river turns east for 8.4 kilometers (about 5.2 miles).
- During this section, it runs parallel to the Beauharnois Canal.
- It flows past a wetland area located between the canal and the river, up to the town of Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague.
Finally, the river flows northeast for about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), winding through Saint-Étienne-de-Beauharnois.
- It then continues for 9.1 kilometers (5.7 miles), passing west of the city of Beauharnois.
- It also flows east of the Beauharnois Power Station before reaching its end.
Where the River Ends
The Saint-Louis River empties into the southern part of Lake Saint-Louis. This lake is a major part of the Saint Lawrence River. The river's mouth is located near the Beauharnois Powerhouse and upstream from where the Chateauguay River joins the lake. A point of land called Pointe Thibaudeau marks the western side of the small bay where the Saint-Louis River meets the lake.
Naming the Saint-Louis River
The name "Rivière Saint-Louis" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the official body in Quebec responsible for naming places.
