Lake Saint Francis (called lac Saint-François in French) is a large lake. It is located where three places meet: southeastern Ontario, southwestern Quebec, and northern New York State.
The lake is part of the Saint Lawrence River. It sits between Lake Ontario and the city of Montreal, Quebec. Lake Saint Francis is also an important part of the Saint Lawrence Seaway. This seaway is a system of canals and channels. It allows ships to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes.
The city of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield is found at the eastern end of the lake.
Important Natural Areas
Lake Saint Francis is home to special natural places. These areas protect important habitats for wildlife.
Lac Saint-François National Wildlife Area
On the south side of the lake, you will find the Lac Saint-François National Wildlife Area. This area protects many wetlands. Wetlands are areas of land covered by water, like marshes.
These wetlands are very important for birds. They provide a safe home for Redhead ducks. Many other kinds of waterfowl also live here. Thousands of migrating birds stop at this area each year. They rest and feed during their long journeys.
In 1987, this wildlife area became internationally recognized. It was named a wetland of international importance. This happened under the Ramsar Convention. The Ramsar Convention is an agreement that helps protect wetlands around the world.
Charlottenburgh Marsh
Another important wetland is the Charlottenburgh Marsh. This marsh includes Cooper Marsh. It is located on the north side of Lake Saint Francis. This area also provides a home for many different plants and animals.
