Saint-Martin-des-Besaces was a small town, also known as a commune, located in the northwest of France. It was part of the region called Basse-Normandie and the department named Calvados.

On January 1, 2016, Saint-Martin-des-Besaces joined with several other communes to form a new, larger commune called Souleuvre-en-Bocage. This means Saint-Martin-des-Besaces no longer exists as a separate commune.

What is a Commune?

A commune is the smallest type of administrative area in France. Think of it like a local town or village. Each commune has its own mayor and local government. They manage things like local schools, roads, and public services for the people living there.

France has thousands of communes. They vary a lot in size, from tiny villages with just a few people to large cities like Paris.

Where Was Saint-Martin-des-Besaces?

Saint-Martin-des-Besaces was located in the Calvados department. This area is known for its green countryside and is part of the Normandy region. Normandy is in the northwestern part of France, close to the English Channel.

The commune was situated about 220 meters (around 720 feet) above sea level. Its total area was about 22 square kilometers (about 8.5 square miles). In 1999, it had a population of 1,061 people.

Joining Souleuvre-en-Bocage

In recent years, many smaller communes in France have decided to merge. This helps them share resources and manage services more efficiently. On January 1, 2016, Saint-Martin-des-Besaces became part of the new commune of Souleuvre-en-Bocage.

This merger means that the people who lived in Saint-Martin-des-Besaces are now part of the larger Souleuvre-en-Bocage community. They share a single local government and work together for the future of the area.
