Welcome to Saint-Michel Basilica-Cathedral
The Saint-Michel Basilica-Cathedral is a landmark in Sherbrooke. It stands tall as a place of worship and a piece of history. Many people visit it to admire its design and learn about its past.
A Look at Its History
Building this grand cathedral took many years. The first part, the lower half, was built between 1914 and 1917. After that, construction stopped for a long time. This pause lasted for 39 years because there wasn't enough money.
Work finally started again in 1956. The upper half of the cathedral was completed in 1957. This long construction period shows how dedicated people were to finishing this important building.
Amazing Architecture and Art
The cathedral was designed by a talented architect named Louis-Napoleon Audet. He was in charge of the design for both parts of the construction. Mr. Audet chose the Gothic style for the building. This style is known for its tall spires, pointed arches, and large windows.
Beautiful Stained-Glass Windows
One of the most striking features of the cathedral is its windows. The large window on the front of the building shows the four Evangelists. These are the writers of the Gospels in the Bible.
Inside, the Cathedral of St. Michael has 105 stained glass windows. These colorful windows were made by Rafaël Lardeur in Paris. They tell stories and create a beautiful, glowing light inside the church.
Special Paintings Inside
The archbishop's chapel within the cathedral holds special artwork. The paintings in this chapel were created by Ozias Leduc. He was a famous Canadian painter. His work adds even more beauty and history to the building.
