Saint-Sever-Calvados was a small town, known as a "commune", located in the northwest of France. It was part of the region called Basse-Normandie and belonged to the Calvados department.
On January 1, 2017, Saint-Sever-Calvados joined with other nearby towns to form a new, larger commune named Noues de Sienne. This means Saint-Sever-Calvados no longer exists as a separate commune.

Exploring Saint-Sever-Calvados
Saint-Sever-Calvados was a charming place with a rich history. It was nestled in the beautiful countryside of Normandy. The town was known for its quiet atmosphere and traditional French way of life.
Location and Geography
Saint-Sever-Calvados was situated in the western part of the Calvados department. This area is known for its rolling hills and green landscapes. The town's elevation varied, with its highest point reaching 350 meters (about 1,150 feet) above sea level. Its lowest point was 144 meters (about 470 feet). The total area of the commune was around 27.92 square kilometers (about 10.78 square miles).
Life in the Commune
Before it merged, Saint-Sever-Calvados had a population of about 1,325 people in 1999. This made it a relatively small community. The people living there were called "Séverins" or "Séverines." The town had its own mayor, Jean-Pierre Nourry, who served from 2008 to 2014. The mayor was responsible for managing the town's daily affairs and representing its citizens.
Local Government
Like all French communes, Saint-Sever-Calvados had a local government. This government worked to provide services for its residents. These services included things like maintaining roads, managing local schools, and organizing community events. The commune was also part of a larger group of towns called an "intercommunality," which helped them work together on bigger projects.
What is a Commune?
In France, a "commune" is the smallest unit of local government. Think of it like a city, town, or village. Each commune has its own mayor and a local council. They manage local services and represent the people who live there.
Why Communes Merge
Communes sometimes merge to create new, larger ones. This often happens to make local government more efficient. By combining resources, the new commune can sometimes offer better services. It can also manage its budget more effectively. This is what happened when Saint-Sever-Calvados became part of Noues de Sienne.
