Saint Andrew's Chapel is a beautiful old church building in Washington, Massachusetts. It was built in 1899 and is made of stone. This chapel is a great example of a style called Gothic Revival from the late 1800s. A man named George Crane gave it as a gift, and it was built right next to his large home, Bucksteep Manor. The chapel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, which means it's a very important historic site.

About Saint Andrew's Chapel

Saint Andrew's Chapel is located in a quiet, rural area of Washington. You can find it on the east side of Washington Mountain Road. It's a single-story building made from local stone, and it has a slate roof. The chapel is shaped like a cross, which is called a cruciform shape. It has a square tower on one side, and the walls are supported by strong stone structures called buttresses. The tower has a low, sloped roof with posts at each corner.

Inside the chapel, the front wall has a beautiful stained-glass window with three parts. The middle part shows Saint Andrew, and the sides have pretty flower designs.

Who Built the Chapel?

The chapel was designed by an architect named George C. Harding from Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He finished designing it in 1899. George Harding was just starting his career then, and he went on to design many different public buildings across New England.

The chapel was built for George Crane, a rich man from New York. He used to spend his summers at the big estate next door. Church services were only held in the chapel when the Crane family was staying there.

Changes Over Time

Eventually, the chapel and Mr. Crane's estate became the property of the Episcopal church group (called the Episcopal diocese). In 1977, the chapel was given to the town of Washington. It is still used as a place for religious services today.
