Saint Matthew's Church (in Swedish, Sankt Matteus kyrka) is a special church building in Stockholm, Sweden. It is located in the Vasastaden area. This church was built between 1901 and 1903.
It was designed by a famous architect named Erik Lallerstedt. At first, it was meant to be a small chapel for the nearby Adolf Fredrik Parish.
History of Saint Matthew's Church
From Chapel to Parish Church
When it was first built, Saint Matthew's Church was in a poorer part of town. Because of this, the large room on the ground floor was planned for charity work. This meant it would help people in need.
The church looks a lot like another church called Saint Peter's Church in Norrmalm. Erik Lallerstedt also designed Saint Peter's Church a few years earlier, in 1899.
Becoming a Parish Church
A few years after it was built, the area around the church changed. Between 1907 and 1908, the church was updated. The original architect, Erik Lallerstedt, helped with these changes. This happened because the local church area was divided. The chapel then became a full parish church, serving its own community.
