The Sainte-Anne Ouest River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Bras du Nord. The river passes through areas like Lac-Blanc, Lac-Croche, and the town of Saint-Raymond. These places are in the Portneuf Regional County Municipality and the Capitale-Nationale region.

You can reach the Sainte-Anne Ouest River mainly by two roads: the R0320 forest road and the Rang Saguenay road. The Rang Saguenay road runs along the east side of the Neilson River and the Bras du Nord.

People in this area mostly work in forestry, which means managing forests and cutting trees. It's also a popular spot for fun outdoor activities like tourism.

The river usually freezes over from early December to late March. However, it's safest to walk or play on the ice from late December to early March.

River's Journey

The Sainte-Anne Ouest River starts at Lake Annette. This lake is about 1.4 kilometres (0.87 mi) long and sits at an altitude of 626 metres (2,054 ft). Lake Annette is on the southern side of the area that divides water flow, near Batiscan Lake.

The start of the river is located:

  • 2.6 kilometres (1.6 mi) south of Batiscan Lake.
  • 25.0 kilometres (15.5 mi) northwest of where the Sainte-Anne Ouest River meets the Neilson River.
  • 47.6 kilometres (29.6 mi) north of where the Bras du Nord meets the Sainte-Anne River.

From Lake Annette, the Sainte-Anne Ouest River flows for about 40.9 kilometres (25.4 mi). It generally flows south through a forest area. The river drops about 427 metres (1,401 ft) in height along its path.

The river's journey can be split into two main parts:

Upper Part of the River

This section of the Sainte-Anne Ouest River is about 15.9 kilometres (9.9 mi) long.

  • It flows 2.0 kilometres (1.2 mi) southeast, going through Lake Querré. Then it crosses Lake Fairchild, which is 2.2 kilometres (1.4 mi) long and at an altitude of 687 metres (2,254 ft).
  • Next, it flows 4.0 kilometres (2.5 mi) east, passing through Lac Le Gardeur. This lake is 3.3 kilometres (2.1 mi) long and sits at 604 metres (1,982 ft) altitude.
  • The river then travels 2.9 kilometres (1.8 mi) south through a deep valley. It crosses an unnamed lake, which is 0.9 kilometres (0.56 mi) long and at 585 metres (1,919 ft) altitude. This part ends where water from other lakes, like Lac Nollet, flows in.
  • It then goes 0.6 kilometres (0.37 mi) west, curving south. This section ends where water from Cunningham Lake joins the river.
  • Finally, it flows 6.4 kilometres (4.0 mi) south. It passes through Pinsart Lake, which is 0.8 kilometres (0.50 mi) long and at 534 metres (1,752 ft) altitude. It then turns west, where water from lakes like Nessa, aux Bleuets, Gorren, and Insipide flows in.

Lower Part of the River

This section of the Sainte-Anne Ouest River is about 25.0 kilometres (15.5 mi) long.

  • It flows 2.9 kilometres (1.8 mi) southwest, collecting water from Lake Betty. Then it crosses Lake William, which is 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) long and at 491 metres (1,611 ft) altitude.
  • The river continues 2.2 kilometres (1.4 mi) southeast, going through some rapids. This part ends where water from two unnamed lakes joins the river.
  • It then flows 2.8 kilometres (1.7 mi) south, crossing Lake Drucilla. This lake is 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) long and at 451 metres (1,480 ft) altitude.
  • Next, it goes 1.1 kilometres (0.68 mi) west, curving north around a mountain. This section ends at a bend in the river, where water from other lakes flows in.
  • It flows 8.3 kilometres (5.2 mi) through a deep valley, first southeast, then south. This part ends where the Crapaud stream joins the river.
  • The river continues 1.8 kilometres (1.1 mi) south through a deep valley, passing more rapids. This section ends where the Red stream joins the river.
  • Finally, it flows 5.9 kilometres (3.7 mi) through a deep valley with rapids. It first goes east, collecting water from an unnamed lake. Then it turns southeast, collecting water from a group of lakes. Near the end, it flows around an island before reaching its mouth.

The Sainte-Anne Ouest River meets the Neilson River. This meeting point is where the Bras du Nord begins. From there, the water flows south along the Bras du Nord. It eventually reaches the northwest bank of the Sainte-Anne River. From that point, the water travels about 76.0 kilometres (47.2 mi) generally south and southwest along the Sainte-Anne River. It finally reaches the northwest bank of the St. Lawrence River.
