What is the Sainte-Anne River?
The Sainte-Anne River is a natural waterway. It is about 17.3 km (10.7 mi) (about 10.7 miles) long. The river flows from its source to the sea. It helps drain water from the land around it.
Where Does the River Start and End?
The Sainte-Anne River begins in a marshy area. A marsh is a type of wetland. This starting point is in the western-central part of Anticosti Island. It is about 118 m (387 ft) (387 feet) above sea level.
The river's source is located:
- About 44.2 km (27.5 mi) (27.5 miles) east of Port-Menier village.
- About 11.8 km (7.3 mi) (7.3 miles) south of Anticosti Island's north shore.
- About 15.6 km (9.7 mi) (9.7 miles) northeast of Anticosti Island's south shore.
The Sainte-Anne River ends its journey in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This is on the south shore of Anticosti Island. The mouth of the river is about 15.5 km (9.6 mi) (9.6 miles) southeast of the western edge of SÉPAQ Anticosti. It is also about 31.2 km (19.4 mi) (19.4 miles) southeast of Port-Menier village.
How Does the River Flow?
From its source, the Sainte-Anne River flows mostly south. It runs between two other rivers. The rivière aux Cailloux is to its west. The rivière à la Loutre is to its east.
The river drops about 117 m (384 ft) (384 feet) from start to finish. This drop makes the water flow faster.
Here is how the river flows:
- For about 11.2 km (7.0 mi) (7 miles), it flows south. Along the way, it collects water from a stream and from Lake Marmen. It also passes under a forest road bridge.
- Then, for about 5.6 km (3.5 mi) (3.5 miles), it flows through SÉPAQ Anticosti. This is a protected area. The river slowly turns southwest.
- Finally, for about 0.4 km (0.25 mi) (0.25 miles), it flows west. It runs parallel to the coast before reaching the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
