The Story of Saladworks
Saladworks was started on October 1, 1986. A person named John Scardapane founded the company. He was the CEO until 2015. His partner, Gail Scardapane, also helped build the brand.
The very first Saladworks restaurant opened in the Cherry Hill Mall. It was a big success! This success led to 12 more locations opening in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Growing the Business: Franchising
Saladworks began allowing others to open their own Saladworks restaurants in 2001. This is called franchising. By 2007, there were 88 Saladworks locations. These were spread across eight states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Florida.
Today, Saladworks has more than 150 restaurants. They are in 24 states. The company plans to open even more locations in the United States and other countries. In June 2015, a company called Centre Lane Partners bought Saladworks. Paul Steck became the new CEO at that time.
New Look for Restaurants
In October 2008, Saladworks started changing the look of its restaurants. They introduced a new design. Restaurants with this new design are called "3G Restaurants."
What's New in 3G Restaurants?
The new design brought several cool changes:
- They added special refrigerated cases to display salads.
- Traditional menu boards were removed.
- The lighting was changed to feel like natural daylight.
- All Saladworks locations started to look more consistent. This means they had a similar style everywhere.
Special Programs at Saladworks
Saladworks has introduced some special programs for its customers. These programs help make their menu exciting and healthy.
Signature Series Salads
In January 2008, Saladworks launched its "Signature Series." For this program, four famous chefs created special seasonal salads. These unique salads were available for a limited time.
True Nutrition Choices
Saladworks introduced "True Nutrition" in April 2010. The goal was to make their menu even healthier. They wanted to make sure most of their pre-made salads had less than 500 calories.
The "True Nutrition" menu added over 50 new salad ingredients. These included healthy options like avocado, edamame, and chickpeas. This gave customers many more choices to build a nutritious meal.
Saladworks in the Rankings
Saladworks has been recognized in the restaurant industry. In 2012, Entrepreneur Magazine ranked Saladworks. They placed it at #416 among the top 500 franchises in America.
Also, in 2010, QSR Magazine featured Saladworks. An article called "10 Great Franchise Deals" included the company. This shows that Saladworks is seen as a good business opportunity.
