The Salazar Center is a tall office building located in downtown Dallas, Texas, in the USA. It stands on the eastern edge of the Main Street District in the city center. This building has 13 floors and is used for offices.
Building History
The idea for this 12-story office building was announced in 1958. It was planned to be the new home for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. The building is located between Main Street, Elm Street, and Cesar Chavez Boulevard.
During its construction in 1958, there was an accident. A large pile of steel beams fell, causing a setback. Despite this, the building was finished and opened in June 1960. It featured a modern exterior with glass and stone. It also had a seven-story parking garage attached.
Blue Cross Blue Shield's 450 employees used the upper floors of the building. Other companies rented space on the lower floors. The twelfth floor had a special cafeteria and auditorium for employees.
Special Features and Changes
The Salazar Center was quite noticeable because it was surrounded by smaller, older buildings. On its roof, there was a very large electronic message sign. This sign was about 113 feet long and 8½ feet tall. It could show 10 different messages, like advertisements or community announcements. Each message would flash for a few seconds.
However, in 1973, the City of Dallas made a new rule. This rule banned large signs on rooftops. Because of this, the big message sign on the Salazar Center's roof was turned off. The company tried to keep another rotating Blue Cross sign, but it was also removed after their request was denied.
In 1982, the building got a big makeover. Blue Cross Blue Shield had moved to new offices in Richardson. So, the Salazar Center was updated. Its original exterior was removed. It was replaced with new bronze, silver, and gray glass, giving it a more modern look.
