The Salesforce Tower is a very tall building in Indianapolis, Indiana. It opened in 1990 and is the tallest building in the state. Before it was called Salesforce Tower, it was known as Bank One Tower and then Chase Tower.
This impressive building stands near Monument Circle. Its two tall spires reach 811 feet (247 m) into the sky. The building has 48 floors of offices and shops. The roof itself is 701-foot (214 m) high.
Salesforce Tower is the main office for Salesforce in this area. They moved into the building in the late 2010s. One of the two spires on top sends out signals, but the other is just for looks. The building was designed by KlingStubbins and built by Huber Hunt & Nichols.
The top of the tower looks like a pyramid with steps. This design matches the nearby Indiana War Memorial. The War Memorial's design was inspired by an ancient structure called the Mausoleum. Because the building is so tall, its roof was made to hold communication equipment. This helps the building owners earn extra money. Sometimes, big signs are put on the roof to support Indianapolis sports teams. These "Go Pacers" and "Go Colts" signs are easy to see from far away.
Exploring the Salesforce Tower Views
The Salesforce Tower does not have a public observation deck. However, you can still enjoy views of the city from certain floors. These views are available in common areas on floors 27, 31, 32, 33, 35, 39, 40, 41, 43, and 44. These spots are on the Ohio Street side of the building.
You can also see Monument Circle from floors 2 and 7. These areas are on the Circle side of the complex. In 2017, new electronic gates were added for security. This means the elevators are not open to everyone anymore. But, you can get a special visitor pass from the security desk. The tower is so tall you can see it from many places around Indianapolis.
How the Tower Was Planned and Built
The idea for this tower started in the late 1970s. Frank E. McKinney, Jr. was in charge of American Fletcher Corporation. This was Indiana's biggest bank at the time. He wanted a new building to bring all his company's offices together.
Land was slowly bought for the building. Older buildings were torn down in the early 1980s. This cleared the way for what McKinney hoped would be Indiana's tallest office tower.
Before building started, American Fletcher Bank joined with another bank. In 1986, it merged with Banc One Corporation from Ohio. Mr. McKinney then became the head of Bank One's Indiana operations. Plans for the tower moved forward quickly.
Construction began in 1988. The new building was called Bank One Center Tower. It was connected to the old bank headquarters on Monument Circle. This connection gave the new tower a famous address on Monument Circle. The main entrance is at 111 Monument Circle. A walkway on the second floor connects the tower to this main entrance.
Over the years, the bank changed names several times. Banc One Corporation later became Bank One Corporation. Then, in the early 2000s, J.P. Morgan Chase bought Bank One. The Indianapolis building was then renamed Chase Tower. However, Chase could not put its name and logo on top of the building until 2013. This happened after the building got new owners.
On May 6, 2016, Salesforce announced big plans. They would rent many floors in the building. Employees started moving in during early 2017. Since then, the building has been known as Salesforce Tower Indianapolis.
