Salomon de Brosse (born around 1571, died December 8, 1626) was an important French architect from the early 1600s. He helped change architecture from a style called Mannerism to a more classic French style, known as French Baroque architecture. He also greatly influenced another famous architect, François Mansart.

His Life and Family

Salomon de Brosse was born in a town called Verneuil-en-Halatte in France. He came from a well-known family of Huguenots, who were French Protestants. His grandfather, Jacques I Androuet du Cerceau, was a famous designer. His father, Jean de Brosse, was also an architect.

Salomon started his own architecture practice in Paris in 1598. By 1608, he became a court architect, meaning he worked for the royal family. He passed away in Paris when he was 55 years old.

Designing the Luxembourg Palace

Salomon de Brosse had a big impact on French architecture. He helped create a more serious and classical style, which became known as French Baroque architecture. His most famous project was the Luxembourg Palace in Paris.

He designed this palace for Marie de' Medici, the queen of France, between 1615 and 1624. The queen had supported his uncle before, so she trusted Salomon. He made the palace simpler and grander than earlier buildings.

The palace has a U-shape around an entrance courtyard. Some people think the design was inspired by the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, Italy, where the queen grew up. Salomon de Brosse used only stone for the building, which was different from the popular style of mixing brick and stone.

Even though he had to leave his job in 1624, the palace was built exactly as he planned. Later additions in the 1800s did not hide his original design.

Other Important Works

Salomon de Brosse worked on many other important buildings and projects during his career:

  • He finished the Château de Montceaux-en-Brie between 1608 and 1615.
  • He built the Château of Coulommiers-en-Brie from 1612 to 1615.
  • He designed the front part (façade) of the Church of Saint-Gervais in Paris (1615–1621).
  • He designed the Parlement de Bretagne in Rennes in 1618. This building is now called the Palace of Justice (Rennes) [fr].
  • He worked on the Aqueduct of Arcueil in 1624, which was a structure to carry water.
  • He also created designs for the Château of Blérancourt around 1611 or 1612.
