The Salta Cathedral (also known as Catedral de Salta) is a very important Roman Catholic church located in Salta, Argentina. It is the main church for the Archbishop of Salta. The cathedral is dedicated to Jesus Christ, known as the “Lord of Miracles,” and the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as “Our Lady of the Miraculous Rosary.”
In 1899, Pope Leo XIII gave special permission for the two important statues inside the cathedral to be crowned. This special ceremony, called a Pontifical coronation, was carried out by Bishop Matías Linares y Sanzetenea on September 13, 1902.
The cathedral officially opened to the public on October 20, 1918. Later, on June 14, 1941, the Government of Argentina declared it a national monument. This means it is a very important historical building for the country.
History of the Cathedral
Building After the Earthquake
A new Salta Cathedral was built starting in 1856. This happened because a big earthquake had destroyed the older church building. Services began in the new church in 1858.
The architect who designed this new cathedral was Felipe Bertrés. The entire building project was finished in 1882.
