Saltdale is located in the desert. It is about 21 miles (34 km) south-southwest of a town called Ridgecrest. You can find it close to a dry lake named Koehn Lake. It sits at an elevation of 1,923 feet (586 m) (586 meters) above sea level.
Why Saltdale Was Founded
Saltdale started in 1914. People built the town to collect salt. This salt came from Koehn Dry Lake. Dry lakes often have salt deposits left behind when water evaporates. Harvesting salt was an important activity here.
Saltdale's Post Office
For many years, Saltdale had its own post office. It opened in 1916. The post office helped people send and receive mail. It was an important part of the community. However, the post office closed in 1950.
