What Makes It Historic?

This district has 118 buildings that are called "contributing buildings." This means they are old and important to the district's history. There is also one special site, one structure, and 15 objects that add to its historical value. Most of these buildings were built between the 1830s and the 1880s.

Buildings from the Past

You can see different styles of old buildings here. Some are in the Federal style, which was popular in the early 1800s. Others are in the Late Victorian style, which came later.

  • Dr. James Crawford House: Built in the 1830s.

  • Western Pennsylvania Railroad Station: Built in 1864.
  • Saltsburg Presbyterian Church: Built in 1874.
  • Sons of Zebedee Evangelical Lutheran Church: Built in 1878.
  • Altman Feed Mill: Built in 1893.
  • First National Bank Building: Built in 1927.
  • DeLisi Theater: Built in 1923.

Old Transportation History

The district also includes a special site that was once a canal and a railroad track. This is where the Western Pennsylvania Railroad used to run. You can also find Lock #8, which was part of the canal system. Today, this area is known as Canal Park. The old retaining walls from the railroad are also still there. You can even find old markers from the canal days. These tell us about how goods and people traveled long ago.
