Playing for Clubs
Salvatore Bagni started his football journey with a club called Carpi in 1975. He played there for two years. After that, he moved to Serie A team Perugia in 1977. He played well there for four seasons, showing great promise.
His good performances led him to join one of Italy's biggest clubs, Inter, in 1981. With Inter, he helped the team win the Coppa Italia in 1982. People thought he could become a very important midfielder for the club.
Bagni is most famous for his time at Napoli, where he played from 1984 to 1988. This was a special period for the club. In 1987, Napoli won both the scudetto (the Italian league title) and the Coppa Italia. This was the first time Napoli had ever won the league title! At Napoli, Bagni often played alongside Fernando De Napoli in midfield. They worked together to protect the defense and help their star player, Diego Maradona, create goals.
After his successful time at Napoli, he played for Avellino for one season (1988–89) before he stopped playing professional football. In total, he scored 52 goals in Italy's top league, Serie A.
Playing for Italy
Salvatore Bagni also played for the Italy national under-21 football team from 1978 to 1980. He scored 5 goals in 12 games for the Under-21 team. He even scored three goals in one match against Greece! With the Under-21 team, he took part in two UEFA European Under-21 Championship tournaments. He also played in the 1984 Summer Olympics, where Italy reached the semi-finals and finished in fourth place.
Later, Bagni played 41 games for the senior Italy national football team between 1981 and 1987. He scored five goals for his country. His first game for Italy was on January 6, 1981, in a tournament called the 1980 Mundialito. He scored his first goal for Italy on February 4, 1984, in a big 5–0 win against Mexico. He scored that goal after only 20 seconds! For a long time, this was the fastest goal ever scored by an Italian player in an international match.
Bagni was considered for the Italian squads for the 1978 and 1982 FIFA World Cup. However, he wasn't chosen for the final teams. Italy finished fourth in 1978 and won the World Cup in 1982. He was later included in the Italian squad for the 1986 FIFA World Cup under coach Enzo Bearzot.
How He Played
Salvatore Bagni was known as a very hard-working and generous team player. He was tough in tackles and had good technique. He usually played as a central, box-to-box, or defensive midfielder. This meant he was good at winning the ball back from opponents and then starting attacks for his team.
Because of his strong and determined playing style, he was sometimes called "The Warrior." Even though he was a friendly person, he sometimes made aggressive challenges during games. He also sometimes got into trouble for his actions on the field. For example, during his time at Napoli, he made a gesture towards rival fans that upset them, which unfortunately damaged the friendly relationship between the two clubs.
While he was mostly known for his energetic style and winning the ball, Bagni also had a good eye for scoring goals. Early in his career, he even played in more attacking roles, like a winger or a forward, showing his ability to help in attack.
Personal Life
Salvatore Bagni is married to Letizia Turchi. They have three children: Elisabetta, Gianluca, and Raffaele. Sadly, their youngest son passed away in 1992.
