From 1875 to 1898, Petruolo's paintings showed the style of the School of Posillipo. This was a group of artists in Naples known for their landscapes. He was also influenced by another artist named Edoardo Dalbono. After 1898, Petruolo's art changed. His paintings became more personal and special. A Painter for Royalty

Salvatore Petruolo was very popular. Many English and American visitors to Naples loved his work. Important people often visited his art studio. These visitors included Empress Frederick and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. Even the Prince of Battenberg and Princess Louise (who was King Edward VII's sister) came to see his art.

In 1889, Petruolo spent three months in Malta. He stayed with the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. He also went on a painting trip to Spain. He visited cities like Granada, Seville, Cordoba, and Zaragoza. After this trip, he showed his new paintings in an exhibition. This show took place at Clarence House in London.
