Discovering Salvia Holwayi
Salvia holwayi was named after a person named Edward Willet Dorland Holway. He was a scientist who collected many different plants and fungi in the 1800s. It's a way to remember his important work in studying nature!
Where Salvia Holwayi Lives
This plant loves to grow in places that are high up, like mountains. You can find it in Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico, at elevations between 3,000 and 9,000 feet (that's about 900 to 2,700 meters) above sea level.
It often grows in forests where there are both pine and oak trees. Salvia holwayi likes to live in the "understory." This means it grows beneath the taller trees, getting some shade but still enough light to thrive. It can also be found in thick, bushy areas.
What Salvia Holwayi Looks Like
Salvia holwayi is a very striking plant. It can grow to be about 3 to 5 feet (around 1 to 1.5 meters) tall. Its stems are long and flexible, and they can spread out a lot, sometimes up to 8 to 10 feet (about 2.4 to 3 meters) wide in just one year! These stems often lean on or grow into other nearby plants and small trees.
Flowers and Leaves
The flowers of Salvia holwayi are a bright, cardinal-red color. They are almost 1 inch (about 2.5 cm) long and look a bit puffed up in the middle. Each stem has many flower clusters, called inflorescences, which can be about 8 inches (20 cm) long. Because so many flowers bloom at the same time, the plant looks very colorful and eye-catching.
Its leaves are shaped like triangles and are a yellowish-green color. You can see the veins on the leaves very clearly. The leaves vary in size, but they are usually about 2 inches (5 cm) long and 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide. Overall, the plant has a very full and beautiful appearance.
