Sam Beazley's Early Life
Sam Beazley was born in Kensington, a part of London, England. He was the oldest of three children. His father, Gordon Beazley, was a captain. His mother was Ellen Beazley.
Sam's family was well-known. His father's family worked in the cotton business. His mother's father, Sir Osmond Williams, was a member of Parliament.
After World War I, Sam's father was often unwell. His parents separated when Sam was young. This happened after the cotton business faced problems. His mother had to ask her father for financial help.
Sam Beazley's Acting Career
Sam's mother encouraged him to become an actor when he was a teenager in the 1930s. He appeared in a play called Where the Rainbow Ends in London. After this, his mother helped him meet a famous actor named John Gielgud.
John Gielgud invited Sam to join his theater group. Sam acted in Gielgud's plays, including Hamlet in 1934 and Romeo and Juliet in 1935. However, a theater critic wrote a negative review about his acting in Romeo and Juliet. Sam felt he "simply hadn’t got the knack" for it, so he stopped acting.
After serving in World War II, Sam Beazley owned an antique shop for many years. He decided to return to acting full-time when he retired at 73 years old. He then appeared in many plays and movies. In his nineties, he also became a painter.
Sam Beazley's Later Years and Legacy
In 2010, a writer named Nicholas de Jongh called Sam Beazley "the last theatre survivor of his generation." This meant Sam was one of the last actors from his early acting days who was still alive.
Sam Beazley lived to be 101 years old. He passed away on June 12, 2017.
