Ahmed Samuel Milai (born March 23, 1908 – died April 30, 1970), known to many as Sam Milai, was an amazing African American artist. He was a talented editorial and comic strip cartoonist. Sam Milai drew for a famous newspaper called the Pittsburgh Courier.

Sam Milai: A Cartoonist's Life
Sam Milai spent his life creating cartoons that entertained and informed people. He was known for his detailed drawings and interesting stories. His work helped share important information and stories with many readers.
Drawing History: "Your History" and "Facts About The Negro"
From 1940 until about 1971, Sam Milai drew a special comic series. It was first called Your History and later changed to Facts About The Negro. Joel Augustus Rogers wrote the stories for this series.
The comic was like Robert Ripley's popular Believe It or Not cartoons. Each episode had many small pictures and stories. These stories shared short, interesting facts about African Americans. They came from Joel Rogers' research.
This comic feature started in the Pittsburgh Courier newspaper in 1934. At first, George L. Lee drew the pictures. But in 1940, Sam Milai took over the artwork. He continued to draw for the series for the rest of its run. Two collections of these comics were published as books. The first was Your History in 1940. The second was Facts About The Negro around 1960.
Other Comic Strips by Sam Milai
Sam Milai also created other exciting comic strips. One of his creations was Don Powers. This was an adventure strip about a super athlete. It was shared by the Smith-Mann Syndicate from 1950 to 1958.
He also drew a strip called Bucky using his own name. Another strip he created was Society Sue. For Society Sue, he used the name Bobby Thomas.
Political Cartoons and Legacy
Sam Milai was also the main editorial cartoonist for the Pittsburgh Courier. He held this important job for 33 years. An editorial cartoonist draws pictures that share opinions about news and politics.
His political cartoons from the 1960s are very special. They are kept safe at Ohio State University's Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. This museum collects and preserves important cartoon artwork.
