Samuel Most (born December 16, 1930 – died June 13, 2013) was an American musician. He played jazz music on the flute, clarinet, and tenor saxophone. He lived in Los Angeles for most of his life. A famous jazz historian, Leonard Feather, once called him "probably the first great jazz flutist."
Sam Most's Early Life and Music Career
Sam Most was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He started his music career when he was 18 years old. He played with several big bands of his time. These included bands led by famous musicians like Tommy Dorsey and Don Redman. Sam also often performed with his older brother, Abe Most, who was also a clarinet player.
First Recordings and Awards
Sam Most made his first recording when he was 23. It was a single song called "Undercurrent Blues." The very next year, he won an important award. DownBeat magazine gave him their "Critic's New Star Award." This showed that people thought he was a rising talent in jazz.
Between 1953 and 1958, Sam Most led many recording sessions. He made albums for well-known record companies. He also played as a guest musician for other artists. From 1959 to 1961, he was a member of the Buddy Rich band. Buddy Rich was a very famous jazz drummer.
Later Career and Special Performances
Sam Most continued to make music later in his life. In the late 1970s, he recorded six albums for the Xanadu label. From 1987 onwards, he recorded four more albums. One of these was called Solo Flute.
Sam Most was also invited to play for the King of Thailand three times. This was a very special honor. A documentary film about his life was made in 2001. It was called Sam Most, Jazz Flutist.
Sam Most passed away on June 13, 2013, in Los Angeles. He was 82 years old.
