Samanta Schweblin, born in 1978, is a talented writer from Argentina. She currently lives in Berlin, Germany. Samanta is known for her amazing short stories and novels. Her stories have appeared in many famous magazines like The New Yorker and The Paris Review. Her books have been translated into over forty languages and some have even been made into movies! She has also won many awards for her writing around the world.

Samanta's Life and Books

Samanta Schweblin started her writing journey early. In 2002, she published her first book, El núcleo del Disturbio (which means "The Nucleus of Disturbances"). This book won an award from Argentina's National Endowment for the Arts, which was a great start!

Award-Winning Stories

In 2008, Samanta won the important Casa de las Americas award for her collection of short stories called Mouthful of Birds. Her third collection of short stories, Siete casas vacías (meaning "Seven Empty Houses"), came out in 2015.

Her First Novel

Samanta's first novel is called Distancia de Rescate. This title means "Rescue Distance" in Spanish, but it was translated into English as Fever Dream. This book was very successful! It won the 2015 Tigre Juan Award and the 2017 Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novella. It was also considered for the 2017 Man Booker International Prize, which is a very big deal in the world of books.

More International Recognition

In 2019, Samanta was nominated again for the Man Booker International Prize. This time, it was for the English translation of her book Mouthful of Birds. The book was translated by an American translator named Megan McDowell.

The next year, in 2020, she was once again on the longlist for the Man Booker International Prize. This nomination was for her novel Kentukis, which was translated into English as Little Eyes. Megan McDowell also translated this book.

Books on Screen

Her novel Distancia de Rescate was made into a film by Netflix in 2021. The movie was directed by Claudia Llosa, and Samanta even helped write the screenplay!

Teaching and New Books

In 2020 and 2021, Samanta was a special guest professor at the Free University of Berlin. She taught literature there, sharing her knowledge with students. In 2022, she won the National Book Award for Translated Literature for her book Seven Empty Houses.

Fans can look forward to a new collection of her stories called Good and Evil and Other Stories. It is expected to be released in English in August 2025.
