Early Life and Education
Claudia Llosa was born in Lima, Peru. Her mother, Patricia Bueno Risso, is an artist. Her father, Alejandro Llosa Garcia, worked in engineering. Claudia has two sisters, Patricia and Andrea. She is also the niece of famous Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa and film director Luis Llosa.
She went to Newton College in Lima. Later, she studied Film Direction at the University of Lima. This helped her learn how to make movies.
In the late 1990s, Claudia moved to Madrid, Spain. From 1998 to 2001, she studied at a film school called Escuela TAI. After finishing her studies, she started writing the script for her first movie, Madeinusa. She then moved to Barcelona to work in advertising.
Film Career
Madeinusa: First Film
Claudia Llosa's first movie was Madeinusa. It tells the story of a small, religious village in Peru. The film shows events that happen during Easter. In the story, people in the village believe they can do anything without punishment during this special time.
Madeinusa was first shown at the Sundance Festival in 2006. It was nominated for a big award there. It also won awards at other festivals, like the Havana Film Festival in 2003 for its script.
The Milk of Sorrow: A Big Success
In 2009, Llosa finished her second film, The Milk of Sorrow (also known as La teta asustada). This movie was inspired by a difficult time in Peru's history. Between 1980 and 1992, there was a period of terrorism by a group called the Shining Path.
The film is based on an old folk belief from the Andes mountains. This belief says that women who went through hard times during that period could pass their worries to their children through breast milk. The movie was filmed in and around Lima in just six weeks.
The Milk of Sorrow was shown at the 59th Berlin International Film Festival. It was the first Peruvian film ever nominated for the Golden Bear Award, which it won! It also won other awards, including the FIPRESCI award in 2009. In Lima, the movie sold more tickets than Slumdog Millionaire when it first came out.
On February 2, 2010, The Milk of Sorrow was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. Later that year, Claudia Llosa was invited to join Hollywood's Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Exploring Peruvian Stories
Film expert Sarah Barrows says that Claudia Llosa's movies do not use old, untrue ideas about Peru's native communities. However, her films sometimes show the tough parts of life for these communities. Because of this, some people from these communities do not always like the movies.
One reason for this was when Llosa said that parts of The Milk of Sorrow were made up. For example, she said that the idea of "the milk of sorrow" and women taking extreme steps to prevent harm were not real.
Other Works
In 2012, Claudia Llosa's short film Loxoro was nominated for an award at the Berlin International Film Festival. It won the Teddy Award for Best Short Film. This film was produced by Oscar winner Juan José Campanella.
Claudia Llosa also wrote a children's book called La Guerrera de Cristal (The Crystal Warrior). It was published in 2013.
Her 2014 film, Aloft, was shown at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.
Claudia Llosa has also directed episodes for TV series. These include 50 años de, Fronteras, Echo 3, and Invasion.
