Samora Muhammad Yunis is a well-known military officer from Ethiopia. He was born in the Tigray Region, which is in the northern part of the country. Samora Yunis became a very high-ranking officer, reaching the level of a four-star general.

He was in charge of the entire Ethiopian National Defence Forces as the Chief of the General Staff. He held this important position from 2001 until 2018.

Biography

Early Life and Military Start

Samora Yunis was born in 1949. He joined the military wing of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front. This group played a big role in Ethiopia's history.

He showed his leadership skills early on. For example, he was a key figure in the Battle of Shire. This battle took place in February 1989.

Leading the Military

In 2001, Samora Yunis was chosen for a very important job. He became the Chief of the General Staff for Ethiopia. This means he was the top military leader in the country. He took over from General Tsadkan Gebretensae.

During his time as Chief of General Staff, he was involved in important decisions. For instance, after a challenging event in Abole in April 2007, General Samora was part of the leadership group that met to decide how to respond.

He served in this role for many years, guiding the Ethiopian military. In June 2018, it was announced that General Se'are Mekonnen would take over his position.

Awards and Recognition

General Samora Yunis received special honors for his service. In 2017, he was given the Order of the Two Niles. This is an important award from Sudan. It shows that his work was recognized internationally.
