Sampson is a small, unincorporated community in Oconto County, Wisconsin, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.

Sampson is located where two county roads, Highway C and Highway D, meet. It's part of the larger area known as the town of Morgan. The community sits at an elevation of 787 feet above sea level.

In Sampson, you can find a few local spots like The Hilltop Tavern, a county highway shop, and the Sampson Valley Vineyard. Sampson used to have its own post office, which was open from 1898 to 1909.

How Sampson Was Formed

The land where Sampson is located was shaped by the last ice age. When the glaciers melted, they left behind a thick layer of rich soil and rocks. This area is known as a "terminal moraine."

Because of this deep layer of glacial material, Sampson has many gravel operations. These companies dig up gravel, which is then used to make concrete and build roads.

Sampson's Early History

A long time ago, in 1838, the United States government signed a treaty with the Menominee Native American nation. This agreement helped clear the way for Wisconsin to become a state.

However, after Wisconsin became a state, there weren't many people living there yet. To encourage more settlers, the government found a way to get people to move to the area. When the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal was built, the government paid the people who invested in the canal with land. This land included the area around Sampson.

These investors then sold the land to immigrants, mostly from Poland and Germany. These new settlers were looking for land to start farms and build new lives. This is how Sampson began to grow into the community it is today.
