Early Life and Calling

After moving to England, Samuel became an apprentice to a cobbler in Chester. This meant he was learning the trade of making and fixing shoes. When he was eighteen, Samuel became a Methodist. About three years later, in 1774, he started working as an itinerant minister. This means he traveled around to different places to preach. He continued this work for more than forty years until he passed away.

His talent for speaking was clear from the very first time he spoke in public. He had to suddenly fill in for a preacher who was not there. Even though he had been nervous about speaking for months, he spoke for an hour without stopping.

Later that same day, many people came to hear him again. He preached for three hours! It was at this moment that he realized his special talent for speaking. He also became famous as a great orator.
