The Samuel Harper Stone House is a very old house in Guernsey County, Ohio. It was built in the 1840s by a famous local builder. Today, it is known as a special historic site because of its age and unique style.

The Samuel Harper Stone House

Who Lived Here?

The first person to live in this house was Samuel Harper. He was an ancestor (a family member from a long time ago) of William Rainey Harper. William Rainey Harper later became the first president of the University of Chicago. However, William never actually lived in this house himself.

Who Built This House?

The Samuel Harper Stone House was built in 1841. The builder was Archibald Boal, who lived in Norwich. Archibald Boal was a very skilled stonemason. This means he was an expert at building things with stone. He built many important buildings, and the Harper House is one of his best works.

What Does It Look Like?

The Harper House is made of sandstone, a type of rock. Its base, called the foundation, is also made of stone. This house is a good example of an "I-house" style. This was a very common way to build houses a long time ago.

The house has two floors. Inside, there is a hallway in the middle of each floor, with rooms on both sides. The front of the house, called the façade, looks like a simple rectangle. The narrow sides of the house go up to a pointed roof shape called a gable. The wider front has five sections, called bays, where windows or doors are.

There is a chimney at each end of the roof. On the front of the house, there are windows in every section on both floors. The only exception is the middle section on the first floor, which has the main front door. The house is very plain, with almost no fancy decorations. The only small decoration is a little design above the main door, on the stone piece called a lintel. Around the house, there are other buildings that were used for farming. The main house was built before any of these farm buildings.

A Special Historic Place

In early 1980, the Samuel Harper Stone House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of buildings, places, and objects that are important in American history. The house was added because of its special and important architecture.

On the same day, another house built by Archibald Boal was also added to this list. That house is the James Hunter Stone House, located near Adamsville.
