Samuel Knox was an important American politician who served in the United States House of Representatives. He was born on March 21, 1815, in Blandford, Massachusetts. He passed away on March 7, 1905.

Early Life and Education

Samuel Knox grew up in Blandford, Massachusetts. He went to local schools in his hometown. After finishing school there, he attended Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He graduated from Williams College in 1836.

He then decided to study law. In 1838, he earned a law degree from Harvard University. This education prepared him for a career in law and public service.

Moving to Missouri

After finishing his studies, Samuel Knox moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1838. He became a lawyer there and started his own law practice. His legal skills were recognized, and in 1845, he became a city counselor for St. Louis. This meant he advised the city government on legal matters.

Serving in Congress

Samuel Knox became involved in politics during a very important time in American history. He was a member of the Unconditional Union Party. This party strongly supported keeping the United States together during the American Civil War.

In 1864, he ran for a seat in the 38th United States Congress. He ran against another politician named Francis P. Blair, Jr.. After some debate about the election results, Samuel Knox was declared the winner. He officially became a U.S. Representative on June 10, 1864. He served in Congress until March 3, 1865.

After Congress

After his term in Congress ended, Samuel Knox tried to get re-elected in 1864 to the 39th United States Congress, but he was not successful. He then returned to St. Louis, Missouri and continued his work as a lawyer.

Later in his life, Samuel Knox moved back to his home state of Massachusetts. He returned to Blandford, Massachusetts, where he passed away on March 7, 1905. He was buried in Peabody Cemetery in Springfield, Massachusetts.
