He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), which is a big honor for scientists in the United Kingdom.

Early Life and Education

Samuel Sugden was born in a city called Leeds in England on February 21, 1892. When he was a boy, he went to Batley Grammar School. After that, he continued his studies at the Royal College of Science, where he learned a lot about science and chemistry.

His Amazing Career

Samuel Sugden had a very interesting career, especially during wartime.

Serving His Country

When World War I was happening, Samuel Sugden joined the British Army. This group of soldiers was sent to fight in other countries. After the war, he became a Research Chemist at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich. This was a place where weapons and military supplies were made.

Becoming a Professor

Later, Samuel Sugden started working at Birkbeck College. He began as a Lecturer, teaching students about chemistry. Then he became a Reader, which is a higher teaching position. Finally, he became a full Professor of Physical chemistry. This meant he was an expert in his field and led studies and teaching.

In 1934, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very special group of top scientists. Only the best scientists are invited to join. A few years later, in 1937, he moved to University College, London to become a Professor of Physical Chemistry there too.

World War II Work

When World War II began, Samuel Sugden joined a new government department called the Ministry of Supply. This ministry was in charge of making sure the British military had all the supplies they needed for the war. He worked there until 1944.
