Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara was born on April 30, 1951. He is a well-known politician and economist from Sierra Leone. He ran for President of Sierra Leone in both the 2018 and 2023 elections. He was the candidate for the All People's Congress (APC) Party.
Before running for president, Dr. Kamara held several important government jobs. He was the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Sierra Leone from 2012 to 2017. He also served as the Minister of Finance and Economic Development from 2009 to 2013. Earlier in his career, he was the Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2009. He also worked as the Financial Secretary in the Ministry of Finance.

Early Life and Education
Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara was born in a place called Kamalo. This area is in the Karene District of Sierra Leone. At that time, Sierra Leone was a colony of the United Kingdom.
His family belongs to the Temne tribe. His father, Pa Gibril Kamara, was from a village near Rothuk. His mother, Ya Bomporro Kamara, was from Kamalo.
Kamara started his schooling at the UCC in Bo. He then went to Saint Edwards Secondary School in Freetown. During his school days, he was a very active football player. He played as a goalkeeper.
After secondary school, he attended Fourah Bay College. In 1972, he earned a bachelor's degree in Economics there. Later, he continued his studies in the United Kingdom. He received a PhD in Development Economics in 1986 from Bangor University in Wales.
A Career in Public Service
Dr. Kamara has had a long career helping his country. In 1994, the World Bank chose him to manage a special program. This program helped Sierra Leone's economy. During this time, he also worked as the Financial Secretary. This role helped build trust in how money from international donors was managed.
In January 1996, he became the Secretary of State for Finance. He continued to serve in important roles. He was the Financial Secretary again, and then the Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone. Later, he became the Minister of Finance and then the Minister of Foreign Affairs. These roles were all part of the APC government led by Ernest Bai Koroma.
As Foreign Minister, he led important meetings for African countries. He chaired meetings of the African Union (AU) C10 committee. This committee works on reforming the United Nations. He also chaired the AU Candidatures Committee. He has also led meetings of the Peace and Security Council of the AU many times.
Currently, Dr. Kamara is leading a team of African ministers. They are working on negotiations for the reform of the United Nations.
Running for President
In 2020, the All People's Congress (APC) party planned to choose a new leader. This leader would run against President Julius Maada Bio in the 2023 elections. Dr. Kamara announced that he wanted to be the APC's leader. He was one of several candidates.
In the 2018 election, Dr. Kamara was chosen as the APC's candidate by the outgoing president, Ernest Koroma. This was a selection, not an election by party members. Many APC supporters were not happy with this decision. The APC party eventually lost that election.
Personal Life
Dr. Samura Kamara is married to Mrs. Elizabeth Massah Kamara. Her maiden name was Rogers. Mrs. Kamara comes from the Pujehun District in Sierra Leone. Her mother was from Masam Kpaka, and her father was from Blama Massaquoi.
