Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara was born on April 30, 1951. He is a well-known politician and economist from Sierra Leone. He has held several important jobs in his country's government.
Dr. Kamara was the candidate for President of Sierra Leone for the All People's Congress (APC) Party. He ran in both the 2018 and 2023 elections. Before that, he served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He also worked as the Minister of Finance and Economic Development. He was even the Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone.
Early Life and Education
Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara was born in a place called Kamalo. This village is in the Karene District of Sierra Leone. At that time, Sierra Leone was a colony of the United Kingdom. His family belongs to the Themne tribe.
He went to school at UCC in Bo. Later, he attended Saint Edwards Secondary School in Freetown. He was a very active football player, often playing as a goalkeeper.
Dr. Kamara then went to Fourah Bay College. He earned a bachelor's degree in Economics there in 1972. He continued his studies and received a PhD in Development Economics in 1986. He earned this advanced degree from Bangor University in Wales, United Kingdom.
Career in Government
In 1994, Dr. Kamara was chosen by the World Bank to manage a special program. This program helped Sierra Leone's economy. During this time, he also worked as the Financial Secretary. This role helped build trust in how money from international donors was managed.
In January 1996, he became the Secretary of State for Finance. He continued to serve in important financial roles. He was the Financial Secretary again and later the Governor of the Bank. He also became the Minister of Finance.
Later, he served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. These roles were all part of the APC Administration. This was when Ernest Bai Koroma was President.
Dr. Kamara has also played a big role in international meetings. He led meetings for African countries at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. As Foreign Minister, he chaired meetings for the African Union. These meetings focused on reforming the United Nations. He also chaired the Peace and Security Council of the African Union many times.
He has led Africa's team in discussions about changes to the United Nations.
Party Leadership Role
In 2020, the All People's Congress (APC) party planned to choose a new leader. This leader would run against President Julius Maada Bio in the 2023 elections. Dr. Kamara announced that he wanted to be the APC leader. He was one of several candidates for this important position.
Dr. Kamara was chosen as the party's candidate in 2018. This decision was made by the outgoing president, Ernest Koroma. Many APC supporters preferred an election for the candidate. The APC party did not win the 2018 elections.
Personal Life
Dr. Samura Kamara is married to Mrs. Elizabeth Massah Kamara. Her maiden name was Rogers. Mrs. Kamara comes from the Pujehun District in Sierra Leone. Her mother was from Masam Kpaka, and her father was from Blama Massaquoi.
