San Cristóbal Totonicapán is a town and a municipality located in the southwestern part of Guatemala. It is part of the Totonicapán department. The town has a population of about 36,119 people. Every year on July 25th, the town celebrates its main festival.
History and Development
Juan Bautista Gutiérrez's Contributions
In the 1920s, a businessman named Juan Bautista Gutiérrez moved to San Cristóbal Totonicapán. He started his first businesses there, including a bookstore and a candle-making shop.
Later, he was chosen to be the mayor of the town. As mayor, he helped bring important improvements to the community. He introduced electricity, which was a big step forward for the small town.
He also helped build a bridge over the Samalá River. This bridge is still used today and is very important for the people living there. Juan Bautista Gutiérrez's children, including his daughter Isabel, were all born in San Cristóbal Totonicapán.
