San Fernando is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Nueva Segovia Department of Nicaragua. It's about 24 kilometers (15 miles) from Ocotal, which is the main city of the department. San Fernando is also around 250 kilometers (155 miles) away from Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua.
This town was once the location of an important event. On July 25, 1927, a battle took place here. It was fought between American Marines and Nicaraguan Guardsmen on one side, and rebels led by Augusto Sandino on the other. This battle was part of a bigger conflict known as the Sandino Rebellion.
Growing Coffee in San Fernando
More than 10,000 people live in the San Fernando municipality. Most of them are coffee farmers. It is thought that there are about 200 coffee farms in this area. Coffee growing is a very important part of life and work here.
Near San Fernando, you can find Mogotón, which is the highest point in all of Nicaragua. This mountain stands tall at 2,106 meters (6,909 feet) above sea level. It is located just 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the town.
