San Fernando de Atabapo is a town in southern Venezuela. It is located right on the border with Colombia. This town was once the capital city of the Amazonas state. It held this important role until the early 1900s. In 1997, about 5,000 people lived here.

History of San Fernando de Atabapo

Early 20th Century Leadership

In the early 1900s, a powerful leader named Tomás Funes controlled San Fernando de Atabapo. He was a type of strong local chief, sometimes called a caudillo. Funes managed the local rubber industry. This industry used rubber from plants found in the area.

The Rubber Industry and Local People

Tomás Funes gained a lot of power from the rubber trade. He used the local native people to work in the rubber industry. His control grew so strong that it started to worry the government of Venezuela.

End of Funes's Rule

Eventually, the Venezuelan government took action against Tomás Funes. He was removed from power in the early 1930s. This event happened in the town square.

Modern Day Presence

Today, a unit of the Venezuelan National Guard is stationed in San Fernando de Atabapo. This military presence helps keep the area safe and secure.
