San Francisco de Conchos is a small town in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. It is also the main town of the municipality of San Francisco de Conchos. In 2010, about 644 people lived there.
The town was started in 1604 by Fray Alonso de la Oliva. This makes it the second oldest town in Chihuahua. Only Santa Bárbara is older. The town got its name from two things: its patron saint, Saint Francis of Assisi, and the local Conchos tribe.
History of San Francisco de Conchos
San Francisco de Conchos was founded by a young missionary named Fray Alonso de la Oliva. He wanted to share his beliefs with the local people. In 1604, he started a mission called "Mission San Francisco de los Naturales del Rio de las Conchas."
Why the Name "Conchos"?
The name "Conchos" comes from the many small shells found in the nearby river. The people living along the river were also called the Conchos Indians.
Over time, more than 4,000 people from different native groups came to live at the San Francisco de Conchos Mission.
Spanish Fort and Protection
In 1685, the Spanish built a fort, called a presidio, in San Francisco de Conchos. This fort was built after a big uprising by native people in 1680, known as the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. The fort helped protect the area.
