San Germán barrio-pueblo is like the main town center of San Germán, a place in Puerto Rico. It is the administrative heart of the area. In 2010, about 2,660 people lived here.
Just like in Spain, towns in Puerto Rico have a special area called a pueblo. This pueblo usually has a main square, the city hall, and a Catholic church. Every year, fun festivals are held in the main square to honor the town's patron saint.
The Main Town Square
The central plaza, or town square, is a lively spot. People gather there to relax, socialize, and enjoy events from morning until night. Long ago, Spanish laws guided how these towns were built. These laws said the plaza should be big enough for all the people. They also said that streets nearby should have comfortable walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.
Right across from the main plaza in San Germán barrio-pueblo is the Iglesia San Germán de Auxerre. This is a beautiful Roman Catholic church.
A Look at History
Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened in 1898, following the Treaty of Paris of 1898. In 1899, the United States counted the people living in Puerto Rico. At that time, the population of the different parts of San Germán's center was 1,493 (Pueblo Central), 821 (Pueblo Occidental), and 1,640 (Pueblo Oriental).
