A Look at San Ignacio's Past
San Ignacio started as a settlement of the Cochimí people, called Kadakaamán. Later, in 1728, a group of Jesuit missionaries built a church there. This church was named Misión San Ignacio Kadakaamán. Father Juan Bautista Luyando was the one who founded it.
Exploring San Ignacio's Location

San Ignacio is located on Mexican Federal Highway 1. This highway connects it to other towns like Guerrero Negro and Santa Rosalía.
You can drive to San Ignacio using Highway 1. The road from Tijuana to Ensenada is wide and has four lanes. South of Ensenada, the highway becomes a narrower two-lane road. It is a good idea to drive only during the day. This is because animals sometimes cross the road at night. Also, the roads can be winding and hard to see in the dark.
If you prefer to fly, the closest airports are in Guerrero Negro to the north. Another option is Loreto to the south.
San Ignacio's Unique Land and Plants
The area around San Ignacio has special soils. These soils are made from basalt, which tells us that volcanoes were once active here.
You can find many different desert plants and animals near San Ignacio. One interesting plant is the elephant tree (Bursera microphylla).
San Ignacio is known for its beautiful palm oasis. This is a green area in the middle of the desert. A large spring-fed pond and a small river flow through the town. This water helps the date palms grow. The river also flows near the old Jesuit mission.
San Ignacio is also a starting point for visiting San Ignacio Lagoon. This lagoon is a special place where Pacific gray whales come to spend the winter.
