San José is a town in Guatemala. It is a type of local government area called a municipality. San José is part of the Petén Department, which is like a state or province.
About 3,602 people live in San José. The town is located on the northern shore of Lake Petén Itzá. It is also very close to ancient Maya ruins. These ruins are from the Classic Period of Maya history.
