The San Jose Center for the Performing Arts opened in 1972. The main architect was William Wesley Peters from Taliesin Associated Architects. The Barnhart Construction Company built the theater.

A few months after it opened, a part of the movable ceiling in the auditorium fell. This happened in 1972. Luckily, no one was hurt, even though 100 seats were crushed. The theater closed for repairs and reopened safely in 1973.

For 34 years, from 1975 to 2008, the theater was home to the American Musical Theatre of San Jose. This group was also known as the San Jose Civic Light Opera.

Inside the Theater

The main part of the center is its large auditorium. It has 2,677 seats in total. These seats are split into two main areas: 1,921 seats are on the main floor (called the orchestra), and 756 seats are on the balcony above.

The center also has two smaller rooms for special events. The Private Ridder Lounge can hold up to 150 people. The Private President's Club is a bit smaller, with space for about 50 people.
