The San Jose Center for the Performing Arts opened in 1972. The building was designed by William Wesley Peters from a group called Taliesin Associated Architects. The Barnhart Construction Company built the theater.

Soon after it opened, a small part of the ceiling needed repairs. The theater had to close for a few months to fix it safely. It reopened in 1973. For 34 years, from 1975 to 2008, the theater was home to the American Musical Theatre of San Jose. This group, also known as San Jose Civic Light Opera, put on many shows there until they stopped performing.

Inside the Theater: Architecture and Seating

The main part of the center is its large auditorium. This is where all the shows happen. The auditorium has 2,677 seats in total. Most of these seats, 1,921 of them, are on the main floor, called the orchestra level. The other 756 seats are up higher, on the balcony.

The center also has two smaller rooms. These are often used for special events or gatherings. The Private Ridder Lounge can hold up to 150 people. The Private President's Club is a bit smaller, with space for about 50 people.
