San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec is a city in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Its name comes from the Nahuatl language, meaning "on the hill of rabbits." People often call it simply Tuxtepec. It is the main city of the municipality that shares its name.
Tuxtepec is the second largest city in Oaxaca by population. It is part of the Papaloapan Region and the Tuxtepec District. In 2020, the city had about 103,609 people living there. The whole municipality had about 159,452 residents.

Tuxtepec is located in a region known as La Cuenca, which means "The Basin" in Spanish. The city is only about 20 meters (66 feet) above sea level. The Papaloapan River flows around the city, making it a watery place. A few kilometers south, the Santo Domingo River joins the Papaloapan, near the Cerro de Oro Dam.
Where is Tuxtepec Located?
The municipality of Tuxtepec shares its northern border with the state of Veracruz. To the east, it borders the municipality of Loma Bonita. To the south, you'll find the municipality of San José Chiltepec.
Tuxtepec is about 160 kilometers (100 miles) from the port of Veracruz. It is also about 209 kilometers (130 miles) from Oaxaca City, which is the capital of the state. Mexico City, the country's capital, is about 499 kilometers (310 miles) away.

Tuxtepec has a warm climate. The hottest months are usually April and May, with average high temperatures around 35-36 degrees Celsius (95-97 degrees Fahrenheit). The cooler months are December and January, with average highs around 27-28 degrees Celsius (81-82 degrees Fahrenheit).
The city experiences a lot of rain, especially from June to September. July is often the wettest month, with heavy rainfall. Even in the drier months, there can still be some rain.
