The Church of San Juan y San Pedro de Renueva.

The Church of San Juan y San Pedro de Renueva is a beautiful church located in León, a city in central Spain. It's a special place that mixes old and new styles of architecture.

What is the San Juan y San Pedro de Renueva Church?

This church was built in the middle of the 1900s. It was designed in a style called Neo-Renaissance. This means it looks like buildings from the Renaissance period, which was a time of great art and learning in Europe. A local bishop named Luis Almarcha Hernández wanted the church to be built. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in some Christian churches.

The Amazing Entrance Gate

The most eye-catching part of the church is its main entrance gate. This gate is much older than the rest of the church! It was originally part of a ruined monastery called San Pedro de Eslonza. That monastery was located about 22 kilometers (around 14 miles) outside of León.

History of the Gate

The gate was made in 1711. It was designed by an architect named Pedro Martínez de Cardeña. The style of the gate is called Baroque. Baroque art and architecture are known for being very grand, dramatic, and full of detailed decorations.

Details of the Gate's Design

The gate has three main sections, one on top of the other.

  • The first section has four tall columns with special tops called Ionic. These columns stand on bases called pedestals.
  • The second section is similar but uses different columns called Corinthian columns, which have fancy, leaf-like tops. This section is also a bit narrower.
  • On the sides of the gate, you can see two round windows. Above the gate, there's another round window and a coat of arms, which is like a special symbol for a family or group.

The front of the gate also has five empty spaces, called niches. These spaces used to hold statues of saints, but they are not there anymore.

The Bell Towers

On each side of the main entrance, there are two tall, thin bell towers. These towers were built at the same time as the rest of the church in the 20th century. They complete the look of this unique building.
